600 Word with my final album cover

Alabama Shakes is an American blues rock band from Athens, Alabama. They were originally called ‘The Shakes’ until ATO Records added ‘Alabama’, as there are many groups that share the same name.

Being able to get a feel of who Alabama Shakes are by their sound, name, video clips and meaning to their songs, is what makes my album art.

Based on their album 'Sound & Color' I will be making an album cover with geometric shapes in Adobe Illustrator and will be manipulating a photograph in Adobe Photoshop.

The main feature on my album art is the geometric shapes. I was able to do this in illustrator with a few tutorials from YouTube as well as help from Lyle. The main tools that were used in Illustrator was the shape tool. I was able to use the shape tool to create the main symbol on my album cover. I was then able to copy my finished symbol into Adobe Photoshop, layered on top of my background. The main tool that was used in Adobe Photoshop was the magic wand tool. I was able to copy and paste each shape with a different look but using the same photo.

Each time I clicked onto a shape, I had to go back and forth. From my copied illustrated symbol layer, which I named ‘outline’ to the background layer, so that I was able to move the chosen shape to another area of the picture, for it to be copied and pasted. Aligning the shapes back into its place was a bit tricky as I wasn’t able to perfectly fit it in to its shape, but being able to zoom in, with a shortcut, was a great help. Also the amount of shapes that had to be worked on was hard work. To work on each shape one by one, back and forth, same process, was something to get use to as well, as the amount of shortcuts I had to do for every shape was confusing. I had to go a step back a lot of times because I was doing something wrong. But being able to edit these mistakes by stepping backwards helped a lot.

For my background I decided to look at sound waves with colour, as their album is called ‘Sound & Color’. So by their album name I was able to choose a background for my album cover. My original background that was going to be used, was a scene from their music video clip ‘Sound & Color’ which is the first track in the album. I chose this specific sound wave background because I feel like their songs are loud but with a nice and soft kind of feeling. So saying this, the colours of the sound wave background that I have chosen goes well with what I was feeling when listening to their album, 'Sound & Color'.

Visually their album covers are simple and plain and was something I wanted to try out as I started collecting ideas for my album art. I was able to use Adobe Illustrator in a way that was easy for me and that worked with my art style. Adobe Photoshop is a great software that I was able to use too.

The font I have chosen was based on their album . I wanted it to be similar to the one on their album. By creating this album art, I was able to incorporate their sound, name and what I felt as a designer to something that I would have done and researched on for an album art cover.
